In all of her paintings, Gunsan-based artist Misun Lee works first and foremost from feeling.
“I hold onto certain moments, encounters—-whatever stirs my emotions.”
Given the ephemerality of her approach, Lee says she “works in binges.”
“I’ll work for hours and hours, nonstop. When I get in the zone, and I can feel something good coming out, it doesn’t matter if the phone rings or a friend calls. I’ll be nodding along to their story as I keep working.”
Lee is having a solo exhibition at the Able Fine Art Gallery—-ongoing until Saturday, March 8, 2014. While the viewer may not recognize anything distinctly familiar or even certain in her collection of large-scale paintings, titled “Communication,” an intensity and a fierce boldness is unmistakably felt.
“I love it when someone tells me they saw something in my painting that is completely different from what I set out to do. Art is powerful and transformative, and leaving it up for interpretation is an art in itself.”
